Summary

Florent Chavouet is a French artist who travelled to Tokyo in 2006 to accompany his girlfriend。 Couldn't find a job that he like (?), he decided to start sketches of everything he saw while roaming around the streets in Tokyo。 From police stations (koban) to buildings, shopping districts to houses in small, narrow streets, bikes to taxis, and he also captured the people from high school girls to old men walking down the streets。 He divided every districts (Shinjuku, Ueno, Shibuya, Roppongi, etc) Florent Chavouet is a French artist who travelled to Tokyo in 2006 to accompany his girlfriend。 Couldn't find a job that he like (?), he decided to start sketches of everything he saw while roaming around the streets in Tokyo。 From police stations (koban) to buildings, shopping districts to houses in small, narrow streets, bikes to taxis, and he also captured the people from high school girls to old men walking down the streets。 He divided every districts (Shinjuku, Ueno, Shibuya, Roppongi, etc) by the sketches of the koban in the district。 There are bits of stories, too: experience funny, strange, even irritating (his own fault, in my opinion)。 The sketches are very beautiful and colourful。 I spent a lot of time observing every page, drinking on every details, every inscription (though without any actual context)。 There's a downside though, his comments on some of the parts (especially on people) are rather judgemental, typical reaction of entitled white people to Eastern culture (ok, racist, there I said it) (yes, I'm playing my colonialism-victim's card)。 。 This book is fun to perused to。 But I think if your aim is to learn more about Japanese culture (or Westerner's view on Japan), I'm sure there are better books out there。 。。。more

Didn't think I'd get sad nearing the end of a graphic novel/memoir about some French guy's six month journey through Tokyo, but as I finished the last page, I felt a certain sadness and pain that this was over。 I didn't want it to end! Definitely enjoyed flipping through visual and the detailed sketches。However every other page having either a negative, racist or judgmental comment did not make it a pleasurable read。

Illustration memoir of Tokyo through all the intersections, tiny streets, and the heavy traffic jam。 A very good nostalgia for someone who once travelled to Tokyo or people who'd like to visit Tokyo one day。 All the drawings are made by pencil color - which suitable with my preference。 Florent was very detail in his illustration, even like the candy wrap or canned drink - he drew it in a very detail manner。 Illustration memoir of Tokyo through all the intersections, tiny streets, and the heavy traffic jam。 A very good nostalgia for someone who once travelled to Tokyo or people who'd like to visit Tokyo one day。 All the drawings are made by pencil color - which suitable with my preference。 Florent was very detail in his illustration, even like the candy wrap or canned drink - he drew it in a very detail manner。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 My husband and I traveled to Japan in 2015, and Chavouet’s illustrations brought me back to the sights, smells, and tastes of that trip。 His colored pencil sketches are incredible, and I loved noticing the details in the corners of each section of Tokyo he included in the many maps。 Chavouet is a truly talented artist, but his sense of humor wasn’t for me; between his “cheap jokes” and a handful of portraits that made fun of fat people or people wearing gender-bending clothing, I felt 3。5 stars。 My husband and I traveled to Japan in 2015, and Chavouet’s illustrations brought me back to the sights, smells, and tastes of that trip。 His colored pencil sketches are incredible, and I loved noticing the details in the corners of each section of Tokyo he included in the many maps。 Chavouet is a truly talented artist, but his sense of humor wasn’t for me; between his “cheap jokes” and a handful of portraits that made fun of fat people or people wearing gender-bending clothing, I felt that his sense of humor was dated (the book was written in 2006) and problematic。 。。。more

Very fun, wish Florent made more books about other cities。

Patrick

Absolutely beautiful illustrations (urban sketches and caricatures)。

Jo

Nice illustrations, text too hard to read。 Also quite insulting in places。

Tiina

Arend

Three stars because the art and the feast of recognition could not beat out the casual “dude looks like a girl” or “tired transvestites” comments, and other gratuitous sarcasm about looks。 This was a re-read (first time probably 10 years ago)。

Preez

Very beautiful illustrations。Love the details。

A delightful exploration of Chavouet's discovery of Tokyo with colorful depictions of everyday scenes in each ward of the city。 Very pretty but no strong storyline。 A delightful exploration of Chavouet's discovery of Tokyo with colorful depictions of everyday scenes in each ward of the city。 Very pretty but no strong storyline。 。。。more

This book is quirky and beautifully illustrated; it makes no claims beyond documenting the author's relatively short time in Tokyo。 The neighborhood maps have pins/references to specific detail pages, but I didn't follow those。 The remaining detail pages highlight ads, products, cafes, or interactions/observations of fellow pedestrians or officials。 It definitely feels French; I appreciated that the "differences" that stood out to the authors don't seem the same as what an American might note (t This book is quirky and beautifully illustrated; it makes no claims beyond documenting the author's relatively short time in Tokyo。 The neighborhood maps have pins/references to specific detail pages, but I didn't follow those。 The remaining detail pages highlight ads, products, cafes, or interactions/observations of fellow pedestrians or officials。 It definitely feels French; I appreciated that the "differences" that stood out to the authors don't seem the same as what an American might note (to me, the police were near invisible, while he was harrassed; likely has more to do with the difference between French and American police, right?); additionally, a few observations seemed "politically incorrect" or there were some stereotypes embraced that I was a little bit surprised about, or overall generalizing about Japan based on time only in Tokyo。 I think it was brilliant, if not fully intentional, to avoid the train and I love the idea of biking around with a chair as the way to see a city。 。。。more

The pictures are nicely detailed, no doubt about it。 What isn't as nice is all the text in the book which seemed frankly, kinda racist to me?

I finally had the chance to read this one! I have been meaning to read it for years but never could find it, until now! Yay! *old review*This is was a light fun read and the sketches sometimes were just so amazing but I loved the fact that they were just sketches and did not feel so professional, the maps were my favorite part about this memoir

While it might be a bit opaque or solipsistic for anyone who has yet to visit Tokyo, for those of us who remember it fondly this sketchbook is a ticket back。

Tokyo On Foot is a graphic memoir of Chavouet’s time spent in Tokyo, June to December of 2006。 It’s a little snapshot of the different neighbourhoods divided by their kobans (the local police stations)。 I love Chavouet’s art style - the realistic buildings and slightly-caricature look of the people - and his particular humour in the annotations。 Oh, and the fruit stickers!A treasure, truly。
